How I spend my mornings...

I'm not a morning person. I really dislike being awake before 7:00 am and I hardly ever move around until 8:00 or 8:30 am. I dislike working out in the morning as well. However, I wake up to about 65 - 70 degree weather at 7:00 am. I should mention I dislike exercising in really hot weather period! Given this fun hot fact I have to weigh the pros and cons of getting up early vs. just not exercising. If you know me, not exercising is just not an option. So while I'm in New Mexico, I'm a morning person :)

The dogs also appreciate my new morning routine. Mostly because they agree, the heat sucks, especially when our new home doesn't have a single river until the Monsoons come. The closest lake is 40 miles away, which we will visit very soon. So I wake up around 7:00 am, start moving by 7:30 am and I try to be out the door by 8:00 am. The goal is to hike or trail run and then come back to the house to do a bit of strength training.

Lucky for me we're two blocks from Silver City's greenspace called Boston Hills. Green being a subjective word, picture lava rocks, dust and cactus. The common wildlife are rattlesnakes, deer, bunnies, javalina, coatimundi, and foxes. I'd really love to see a coatimundi but they are rare. The trail system is fantastic I can choose a 30 minute loop, 50 minute loop or even an hour loop. There will be a 1/2 marathon on Boston Hills in July, if you loop around enough I'm sure you can easily do 13.1 miles. The elevation is 6300 feet, good training for my 3200 feet trained legs and lungs!

The second day I was here I biked down to the Bike & Hike shop looking for information on trails. For anyone thinking about trail running, seek out the bike shops. Great mountain biking = great trail running. They turned me onto the Gomez Trail System. It's great because unlike Boston Hills there are Pinnon Pines, Ponderosa Pines and really tall Alligator Junipers, which of course means shade! I've done two different loops and I'm ready to bag a peak soon. There's two different peaks between 7300 and 7600 feet.

There's still a few other trails Dragonfly, Fort Bayard (I'll run this Saturday in the Fort Bayard 8 mile wilderness run), Signal Peak and a few others. If I didn't have trail running I'd be really bored!
